Liam Lawlor

Question:

322 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education, in view of press reports, if Lucan, County Dublin, is still under active consideration as the location for an Irish-speaking community college; if Celbridge has been ruled out in favour of Leixlip as the preferred Kildare alternative to Lucan; if so, the reasons for this, having regard to the views of parents; and if she will make a statement on the matter. Question:

329 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Education if, contrary to press reports, Lucan is still under active consideration as the location for an Irish-speaking community college; if Celbridge has been ruled out in favour of Leixlip as the preferred Kildare alternative to Lucan; the reasons for this given the views of parents; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3028/94]

I propose taking Questions Nos. 322 and 329 together.

The current position is that no decision has been taken on the question of where a new all-Irish post-primary school to serve the West Dublin/East Kildare area should be located.
Two applications have been under consideration within my Department:
—from County Dublin vocational education committee to the effect that such a school should be provided in Lucan, County Dublin;
—from County Kildare vocational education committee to the effect that such a school should be provided in Celbridge, County Kildare.
However, my Department is of the view that Leixlip should also be taken into consideration as a possible location in order to give the fullest possible consideration to the issue.
County Kildare vocational education committee has been informed accordingly and its observations and proposals are awaited.
A decision on the matter will then be taken in the light of all the relevant data.
