Vol. 447 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - School Transport.

Enda Kenny

Question:

335 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Education if school transport can be made available in the case of persons (details supplied) in County Mayo. [3105/94]

Bus Éireann, which acts as my Department's agent in the operation of the school transport scheme, has reported that the children in question may join the Tourmakeady post-primary service bus, at a point 2.2+ miles from their home on the days when the post-primary school is in operation.

These children are basically ineligible for school transport, in that they live less than two miles from their nearest national school. However, under a special temporary arrangement made within the last few years, ineligible children may avail of concessionary fare-paying transport to a school other than their nearest subject to certain conditions.

These conditions stipulate that there must be room on an existing local service after all eligible pupils have been accomodated, that no extra cost should be incurred through carrying them and that they should secure the written agreement of the authorities of their nearest school to the provision of such transport.

If the parents wish to pursue this option, they should contact their local Bus Éireann office.
