Vol. 447 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - School Staff.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

348 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education the reason backup services are not satisfactory at a school (details supplied) in Dublin 8; if a remedial service, which would be independent of the pupil/teacher ratio quota, will be introduced at a school (details supplied) in Dublin 8; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3219/94]

The school in question is already in receipt of significant backup services.

In addition to the school principal, the school has the following staffing; five class teachers, two remedial teachers, one concessionary teacher (in recognition of the school's location in a disadvantaged area), and one Home/School Liaison teacher shared with another school.

Both of the remedial teacher posts and the concessionary teacher post are ex-quota and, as such, constitute additional teaching resources over and above that required by the pupil/teacher ratio.

As a result of the Deputy's inquiry, I am asking my Department's Inspectorate to examine the manner in which resources are currently deployed within the school to ensure that pupils attending the school derive optimum benefit from these resources.
