Vol. 447 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Use of Footpaths.

Seán Haughey

Question:

119 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice if she has satisfied herself that the law prohibiting motor cyclists and cyclists from riding on footpaths is complied with and enforced by the gardaí. [3033/94]

I am satisfied that the legal provisions which prohibit motor cyclists and pedal cyclists from riding on footpaths are enforced by the gardaí. Where offences of this kind are committed and evidence is available, proceedings are taken by the gardaí. The Commissioner's Crime Report for 1993 shows that during that year proceedings were taken in 7,082 cases under the Road Traffic General Bye-Laws, 1964. This figure included prosecutions for driving motor cycles and pedal cycles on footpaths. However, specific figures for these offences are not readily available.
