Vol. 447 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Safety of Toys.

Enda Kenny

Question:

89 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the safeguards and preventive measures, if any, he will implement in respect of the sale and distribution of dangerous toys during the forthcoming Christmas period; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3601/94]

The sale and distribution of toys throughout the European Union is governed by Council Directive 88/378 EEC of 3 May 1988 on the approximation of the laws of the member states concerning the safety of toys. This directive was transposed into Irish legislation by means of the European Communities (Safety of Toys) Regulations, 1990 (S.I. No. 32 of 1990). These regulations which are enforced by the Director of Consumer Affairs prohibit the placing of toys on the market unless they meet certain essential safety requirements.

The director maintains a close watch on the toy market not only at Christmas time but throughout the year and ensures that any offending article is removed from the market place. I understand that inspectors from the director's office have recently completed a nationwide survey to examine compliance with the Irish regulations. They found a number of toys that did not comply and took appropriate action.
Should the Deputy wish, the director has indicated that he would be happy to supply him with further information in the matter.
