Vol. 447 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - County Tourism Committee.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

21 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade if he has established a Kerry County Tourism Committee; the number of members on the board; and the organisations that they represent. [3665/94]

At the outset I should explain that tourism promotion at regional and county level is the responsibility of the Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs). I have no function in relation to the election of members of county tourism committees which is a matter for the RTO membership.

Revised structures of Irish tourism at regional and county level were agreed by the RTOs on 29 October 1993. In line with the agreed transitional arrangements, a Kerry county tourism committee was formed on an ad hoc basis to replace the existing Cork-Kerry regional council pending formal ratification of the revised articles of association by the south-west RTO.

However, at an extraordinary general meeting of the south-west RTO on 25 July 1994, the company failed to obtain the 75 per cent majority support of the members necessary to adopt the revised articles of association and give effect to the new structures. Accordingly, definitive new structures have not yet been established.
