Vol. 447 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Services for the Mentally Handicapped.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

30 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has to provide additional resources for agencies such as St. Michael's House which works for people with learning disabilities in Dublin 5 and Dublin 13. [3683/94]

Additional funding amounting to £4.192 million has been provided in 1994 for the development of services for persons with a mental handicap in the Eastern Health Board region.

The funding has enabled a broad range of additional services to be put in place including the following: 104 additional residential respite places; 230 additional day places; additional home support for over 500 client-families and the continued transfer of persons with a mental handicap from St. Ita's Hospital, Portrane, to more appropriate accommodation within the mental handicap services. St. Michael's House services received over £636,000 in additional funding in 1994.

It is the Government's intention to build on these developments in 1995 and the future years in line with the commitments outlined in both the Programme for Competitiveness and Work and the Health Strategy — Shaping a Healthier Future.
