Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - Road Signs.

Michael Ring

Question:

127 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment if he will have arrangements made to have signs placed outside towns and on all routes to County Mayo indicating left hand side drive in view of the fact that there have been a number of fatal accidents due to foreigners driving on the wrong side of the road; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1299/95]

The provision of warning signs on public roads in any particular area is primarily a matter for the appropriate road authority. My Department has, however, arranged for the preparation for a detailed traffic signs manual for use by road authorities. The manual, which will be available later this year, will outline a code of good practice to be followed by road authorities in relation to traffic signs generally. The provision, at appropriate locations, of signs of the type referred to in the question will be considered before the manual is completed.
