Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - Special Educational Project.

Tony Gregory

Question:

145 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the concerns of the parents of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 1 and their dissatisfaction with the special educational project; and if her Department will assist with finding an alternative school for the child. [3832/94]

I am aware of the case to which the Deputy refers.

It is my understanding that the concerns expressed by the boy's parents arose initially during November last year, when the school project in question had to be closed as a result of serious damage caused by a fire at the premises.

I understand that further difficulties subsequently arose when the child's class teacher was absent on sick leave and the project encountered difficulty in securing the services of a substitute teacher.

I readily appreciate the concerns of the boy's parents at his absence from school during the periods in question. However, it will be appreciated that the circumstances surrounding these events were outside the control of the project.

I understand that the difficulties which the project encountered over the period in question have now been explained to the boy's parents and the boy has resumed his place at the project with effect from 18 January 1995.
