Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - Early Start Programme.

Michael Creed

Question:

165 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education her intentions regarding recruitment of teaching personnel for the Early Start Programme; the status Montessori teachers have in terms of recognition of their teaching qualifications within her Department in this regard; and if Montessori teachers will be allowed participate on the Early Start Programme. [1267/95]

The early start pre-schools which have recently been established are being developed as an integral part of the primary schools to which they are attached. Each pre-school is therefore staffed by two fully qualified primary teachers and two qualified childcare assistants.

My Department recognises the Montessori Diploma awarded on successful completion of the three year course at the Montessori College, Mount St. Mary's, Dundrum Rd., Milltown, Dublin 14 (formerly Sion Hill). Persons holding this diploma may be granted exceptional recognition in special schools for children with a mental handicap, emotional disturbance or hearing impairment. It is not intended that Montessori trained teachers be appointed to the Early Start pre-schools.
