Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - Physical Education Hall.

Mary Harney

Question:

167 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Education when her Department will fund the building of a physical education hall and a remedial classroom which is required at a school (details supplied) in Dublin 24; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1277/95]

I am anxious to extend the provision of general purpose facilities in primary schools and in this regard, I have indicated my intention to provide for general purpose rooms in new primary school building projects in respect of schools of four classrooms or more. However, the pace at which this can be achieved will be dictated by the financial resources available and the priority must remain the provision of essential classroom accommodation and the elimination of existing substandard classrooms. Regrettably, therefore, it is not possible to provide grant-aid for general purpose rooms in existing schools.

With regard to the provision of a remedial room, no application has been received in my Department from the Board of Management. Should an application be submitted it will be considered for approval in the normal way.
