Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - Denominational Schools.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

173 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Education whether she intends to give denominational schools the right in law to refuse to enrol pupils on religious grounds; whether this would amount to a change of practice and entitlement for national and voluntary secondary schools; whether consideration has been given to the right of parents, irrespective of their religious persuasion or views, to enrol their children in State-funded schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1383/95]

As the Deputy will be aware my proposals for legislative change and my considered approach to the many issues underpinning the need for reform will be revealed in the upcoming White Paper. I would expect the White Paper to clarify the position in relation to the issues of concern to the Deputy.
