Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - School Bus Tickets.

John O'Leary

Question:

193 Mr. O'Leary asked the Minister for Education the cause of the long delay in issuing school bus tickets to a person (details supplied) in County Kerry; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1542/95]

Free tickets were issued for the children in question in the belief that the children lived in the area named, and that they were thus eligible for school transport to the national school specified in the question.

Subsequently, Bus Éireann reported that the childrens' home is in fact 9 miles from the school to which they are seeking free transport. It is stated that the children were being driven to the house of their aunt to join the service to that school.
One of the children involved is eligible for free transport to the nearest national school, which is 2.4 miles from their own home. The second child reached 10 years of age on 5 April, 1994, and may be given a concessionary fare-paying facility. Service to this school passes the family home and there is accommodation available on it.
The parent was advised of the situation and the tickets to the more distant school were withdrawn.
