Seán Haughey

Question:

218 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice if the Garda Commissioner and her Department will introduce rules to prohibit large vehicles parking in residential areas; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1394/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 197 and 218 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Garda Commissioner considers that the most appropriate way of controlling the parking of large vehicles in residential areas is for him to make by-laws under the relevant provisions of the Road Traffic Acts. Such by-laws can only be made after consultation with the local authority concerned and with the consent of the Minister for the Environment.

The Commissioner is at present involved in the process of making temporary rules to prohibit the parking of such vehicles in residential areas. In addition, the question of the provision of alternative parking for these vehicles is being examined in consultation with Dublin Corporation.
