Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - Applicants for Passports.

Seán Haughey

Question:

199 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice if an applicant for a passport who wishes to have his identity confirmed by a member of the Garda Síochána is specifically required to present himself at his local Garda Station for those purposes; if the applicant must be personally known to the Garda involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3893/94]

An applicant for a passport must have the certificate of identity at section 8 of the official passport application form completed at a Garda station by a member of the Garda Síochána. An applicant may present the form at any Garda station for this purpose.

It is not a requirement for the applicant to be personally known to the certifying Garda — the requirement is that the Garda concerned be satisfied as to the applicant's identity. Where the applicant is not known to the Garda, this requirement can be met by, for instance, the applicant having his/her indentity confirmed either by another member of the Garda Síochána or by a reputable person known to the Garda.
