Vol. 447 No. 11

Noel Ahern

Question:

206 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice the present Garda strength in counties Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan and Louth compared with counties Laois, Offaly, Carlow and Kilkenny; the numbers permanently transferred out in the first three months of the ceasefire; and the estimated number to be transferred in the next 12 months should the ceasefire situation continue. [1094/95]

The current Garda strength allocated to each of the counties referred to in the question is as set out as follows.

204

Monaghan

248

238

The detailed deployment of Garda manpower is a matter for the Garda authorities, who continually review the policing arrangements for all areas to take account of changing needs and circumstances. I am informed by the Garda authorities that, while there has been no adjustment in Garda strengths arising from the ceasefires in the North, the changed security situation is being taken into account in ensuring that all available Garda manpower is being used to best advantage.
