Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - Unestablished Civil Servants.

Bertie Ahern

Question:

221 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Minister for Social Welfare the names of all unestablished civil servants appointed since 15 December 1994, including programme managers, special advisers and other staff; and the salaries, duties and terms of appointment of these appointees. [1465/95]

Five staff have been appointed in an unestablished capacity in my Department since 15 December 1994, as follows: Minister: personal assistant, Katherine Chandler, £18,584 per annum; Minister of State: personal secretary, Rose Kearns, £12,561 per annum; other appointments: two services officers and one cleaner, from existing panels, standard payscales.

I am currently making arrangements to appoint a special adviser but the details of the appointment have not yet been finalised. The Minister of State at my Department, Deputy Bernard Durkan, is in the process of making two appointments as civilian driver. The function of personal staff is to assist me and the Minister of State in discharging our responsibilities as public representatives and holders of Government Office in a Department of State with responsibility for delivery of social welfare services to the public.

The three appointments as services officer/cleaner were made from existing panels to fill normal course vacancies in my Department; the pay and duties are the standard for these grades.

The terms of appointment, rates of remuneration and conditions of all the unestablished staff detailed above are in accordance with standard terms of appointment and rates determined by the Department of Finance.
