Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - THORP Report.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

271 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if his attention has been drawn to the recent report of the Radiological Protection Institute and to the concern of people living along the east coast in relation to the danger from the Thorp Nuclear Reprocessing Plant; the plans, if any, he has to try and secure the closure of this plant; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1375/95]

The report of the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland referred to by the Deputy is the annual report of the Institute for 1993. The report contains a summary of a detailed statement, issued by the Institute in December 1993, of its view on the decision of the UK Authorities, announced on 15 December 1993, to give approval for the operation of THORP by granting revised discharge authorisations for the Sellafield site. I am aware of the Institute's concerns and of the concern of people living along the east coast about the danger from THORP and other nuclear installations.

The Government in its policy agreement "A Government of Renewal", sets out its views on nuclear threats arising not only from THORP but other installations also and its proposals for dealing with these.
The legal and technical aspects are being examined urgently in my Department with a view to taking the necessary action.
