Vol. 447 No. 11

Written Answers. - Drug Addiction Counselling.

Tony Gregory

Question:

86 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Health the number of persons obtaining counselling for drug addiction in the Dublin area; the number of drug addiction counsellors employed in this work; the average recommended number of addicted persons per counsellor; and if he intends to allocate additional addiction counsellors to the City Clinic, Amiens Street, Dublin 1. [1013/95]

Limerick East): Any person attending a satellite clinic or the Drug Treatment Centre receives counselling for drug addiction. At present there are in excess of 600 persons on such programmes.

There are 35 counsellors employed in this work including two at the City Clinic. There is no recommended figure of drug misusers per counsellor. My Department is regularly in touch with the Eastern Health Board about the evolving situation of drug misuse in Dublin to ensure that an appropriate and comprehensive range of services is available in the Dublin area.

The situation regarding the level of services for drug users, including counselling services, is kept under review with the Eastern Health Board.
