Vol. 448 No. 6

Written Answers. - Road Signposting.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

110 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Environment the directions his Department has issued or will issue to local authorities to ensure that, following on the recent reclassification of national primary roads, existing signage will comply fully with legal regulations and guidelines, particularly in relation to terminus towns; and the extra resources, if any, that are being provided to comply with this. [2574/95]

Overall responsibility for the planning and supervision of works, including signposting, on the national road network is a matter for the National Roads Authority whose specific functions include the preparation of schemes for the provision of traffic signs. Responsibility for signposting of non-national roads is a matter for each road authority, financed from its own resources and by the annual discretionary State road grants. It is a matter for each authority to monitor the standard of signposting on the non-national road network in its area and to determine the priorities for the expenditure of available funds.

A detailed traffic signs manual for use by road authorities will be available later this year. This will outline a code of good practice to be followed in the provision of traffic signs on all classes of roads.
