Vol. 448 No. 6

Written Answers. - Extension of Youthreach Programmes.

Brendan Smith

Question:

21 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Education the progress, if any, that has been made in relation to the extension of Youthreach programmes as envisaged under the Programme for Competitiveness and Work, 1994 to 1999; and the progress, if any, made in relation to the provision of permanent employment for co-ordinators and resource staff. [2478/95]

The Programme for Competitiveness and Work stated that the provision for Youthreach programmes would be extended and that discussions would be held to review the staffing arrangements for these programmes.

An additional 400 extra places were provided by my Department for the programme in 1994 bringing the total number of places in the education sector to 2,000. I expect to be able to expand the programme by a further 450 places in 1995.
The commitment in theProgramme for Competitiveness and Work to review the staffing arrangements is being pursued. The Department has met the relevant management and staff interests. It has sought proposals from a number of consultants to undertake a review of the staffing of Youthreach programmes. The contract for this study will be placed shortly.
