Vol. 448 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dungarvan (Waterford) Technical College.

Brendan Kenneally

Question:

47 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for Education if she will confirm that the extension promised for Dungarvan Technical College, County Waterford, will proceed as planned; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1258/95]

County Waterford Vocational Education Committee intends to proceed with the planning of the proposed extension to Dungarvan Technical College. A schedule of accommodation has been agreed and design consultants have been appointed by the vocational education committee.

In order to facilitate the extension the vocational education committee have endeavoured to purchase additional land adjacent to the school. Two suitable sites were identified by the vocational education committee. One of these was later sold to a third party and the other was taken off the market. The vocational education committee hopes that part of the site which was sold will come on the market again in the near future.

In the meantime, it has been agreed that the planning of the extension can proceed as there is sufficient space on the site to accommodate the proposed new building. However, as the hard play area will then be limited it would be in the best interest of the school to secure additional land if possible.

A meeting will be held in the near future between officials of the Department and the vocational education committee and their design team to discuss the planning of the extension which is currently estimated to cost £1.5 million.

Pending completion of the planning process it is not possible to say when the project will be ready to proceed to construction. The timing of the invitation of tenders and the placing of a contract will be considered in due course having regard to the capital resources available and to other commitments and priorities.
