Vol. 448 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dún Laoghaire College.

Helen Keogh

Question:

53 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Education the type of urban college she proposes to build on the existing campus in Dún Laoghaire; if it will have regional technical college status; and when building will commence. [2595/95]

The Government of Renewal Policy Agreement indicates that the Government will proceed with the proposed new regional technical colleges. An urban college will be developed on the existing campus in Dún Laoghaire in the lifetime of this Government.

The seriousness of my intention in this regard is demonstrated by the fact that I have set aside funds for the pre-construction stage of the project in 1995 and I expect that the building work will get underway in the latter part of 1996.

The college will provide a broad range of courses focussed in particular on urban and catchment needs. For the most part, like the regional technical colleges, the courses will have third level standing.

In the short to medium term, the new college will have a beneficial impact on employment in the area — initially in construction jobs and subsequently in additional teaching and administrative jobs when the college is fully operational.

I am pleased that the commitment by so many people to the college for Dún Laoghaire is now matched by Government action.
