Vol. 448 No. 6

Written Answers. - Task Force on Music Industry.

Liam Lawlor

Question:

99 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he will proceed with the establishment of a Special Task Force on the music industry; the length of time it would take for such a Task Force to report back to him; his views on whether this is the best way forward; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2761/95]

The establishment of a Special Task Force on the Irish Music Industry will proceed within a matter of weeks. The Deputy may be aware that this task force had in fact been commissioned by me in October last but its establishment was subsequently delayed. It is my intention to begin the process again shortly and, once the task force commences deliberations, I expect that a report can be produced before the end of the year.

I believe that the establishment of this task force is the best way forward as it replicates a similar and highly successful initiative which was taken in respect of the film industry. The task force will advise on the approach to be taken in carrying out a detailed examination of the music industry in Ireland to identify the potential for job creation; provide advice on the appropriate mechanisms for supporting and promoting viable initiatives in music management, promotion and education in all aspects of the music industry; and develop an effective strategy to maximise the cultural and economic potential of the music industry throughout the country.
