Vol. 448 No. 6

Written Answers. - Testing of Private Cars.

Noel Ahern

Question:

101 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment if compulsory roadworthiness testing of private cars will be introduced in two years time; the preparations completed to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter with particular reference to upcoming decisions for implementation and operation. [2950/95]

Séamus Hughes

Question:

106 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Environment if compulsory testing such as MOT of cars will come into effect in this country in view of domestic legislation or EU regulations. [2528/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 101 and 106 together.

EC Council Directive 91/328 of 21 June 1991 requires those member states, including Ireland, which do not already have a system of periodic road worthiness testing of cars to have such a system in operation by 1998. Pending approval by the Government in due course of specific proposals in the matter, I am not in a position to say what the detailed arrangements will be.
