Vol. 449 No. 1

Written Answers. - Galway Sewage Treatment.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Question:

114 Mrs Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has in relation to the provision of sewage treatment facilities in Galway city; his views on Galway corporation's decision regarding the location of the plant; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3310/95]

The Galway main drainage scheme, consisting of five separate projects and costing an estimated £40 million, is one of the major environmental projects selected for assistance from the Cohesion Fund. The scheme is designed to provide a storm and waste water collection system for the city and its environs, including Oranmore, and a secondary treatment plant at Mutton Island, environmental impact assessment for which has been completed.

Work on the collection system is expected to begin later this year. Cohesion Fund approval of the treatment plant proposals is awaited.
