Vol. 449 No. 1

Written Answers. - Edmund Rice College.

Willie O'Dea

Question:

119 Mr. O'Dea asked the Minister for Education if she will allow the Edmund Rice College, Shelbourne Road, Limerick, to teach pupils in senior cycle; and, if so, when a decision on this matter will be made. [3055/95]

The Edmund Rice College was established in 1993 to meet the needs of a large number of boys in Limerick city who were unable to find places in the existing post-primary schools. It is a voluntary secondary school, managed by the Christian Brothers, and was established for the purpose of catering for junior cycle pupils only.

The first intake of pupils into the college are due to complete the junior cycle in 1996. The option of retaining these pupils through the development of a senior cycle at the Edmund Rice College is one possibility for consideration by my Department and by the owners of the school, the Christian Brothers.

My Department is currently considering how best to cater for these pupils at senior cycle level in the context of a major review of the post-primary needs of the entire Limerick city area. I anticipate that appropriate decisions will be taken in the light of the conclusions of this review which is due for completion shortly.
