Vol. 449 No. 1

Written Answers. - Dundalk (Louth) Schools.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

134 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Education if she will allocate a child care assistant to Saint Bridget's special school, Dundalk, County Louth, in view of the necessity for this post; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3137/95]

My Department has received an application for child care assistant support from the school in question.

As I recently announced, I intend to allocate an additional 100 child care assistant posts in 1995. These posts will be allocated on a priority basis having regard to the level of need for such support among the various categories of children involved.

The needs of all schools, including St. Brigid's special school, Dundalk, will be considered in the context of this allocation.

Question:

135 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the accommodation situation at post-primary level in Drogheda, County Louth, in 1995; the plans, if any, she has to rectify this situation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3138/95]

I am indeed aware of the current difficulties in relation to accommodation at post-primary level in the Drogheda centre. As a first step in resolving these difficulties, a comprehensive review of the accommodation needs of the schools in Drogheda has been completed by my Department. Based on this review, I expect to be in a position shortly to make a decision regarding the provision of additional accommodation in the centre. In the interim, an application from any of the schools in Drogheda for temporary accommodation to meet an immediate need will be given urgent and sympathetic consideration.
