Vol. 449 No. 1

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given under Standing Order 20 and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Batt O'Keeffe — the provision, if any, that will be made in view of the fact that a 15 year old youth was sentenced to three months in jail on 7 February 1995 because there was nowhere else to send him; (2) Deputy Hughes — the need to approve a new psychiatric day care centre for Westport, County Mayo, as prioritised by the Western Health Board having regard to the present inadequate facility; (3) Deputy Michael Kitt — the present situation of Irish citizens in Sierra Leone in view of the escalation of the civil war; and the effort, if any, the Government is making concerning their welfare; (4) Deputy Connaughton — the cost to national schools of television licences, which is prohibitive and totally unnecessary, for televisions which are used solely and exclusively for showing educational videos within the school; (5) Deputy Theresa Ahearn — the serious staff shortage in the Farm Development Office in Clonmel, County Tipperary, resulting in farmers' grant applications not being processed; the need to provide this staff so that the backlog of applications can be processed and farmers provided with an adequate service; (6) Deputy Ring — the need to grant work permits to two foreign nationals who are resident in the State; (7) Deputy Upton — the need to ensure that the maximum possible number of organs for transplantation are made available in this country; (8) Deputy Seán Ryan — the decision taken by the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications and Aer Rianta to enter into a third party handling agreement at Dublin Airport from 1 January 1995, particularly in view of the pending EU legislation on this matter which when enacted will apply to all member states; (9) Deputy Broughan — the water supply crisis in Fingal and the northern fringe of Dublin city; (10) Deputy Eric Byrne — the urgent need to review all aspects of our censorship legislation; (11) Deputy Kenneally — the possible closure of the ESB regional office in Waterford which is part of a cost cutting package, and whether ministerial approval has been given to this cost cutting package; (12) Deputy Keogh — the dispute between the Minister for Education and the teacher unions over the issue of an early retirement scheme for teachers; (13) Deputy Creed — the enormous inconvenience caused to disabled persons as a result of a decision by the Revenue Commissioners to centralise the processing and certification of fuel repayment claims in vehicle registration offices many of which are inaccessible to the handicapped; and the need to restore the old scheme whereby such claims can be certified at local Garda stations and (14) Deputy O'Donoghue — the action that will be taken to tackle the drugs problem in Dublin following the revelations and disclosures made in last Thursday's RTE programme, "Prime Time".

The matters raised by the following Deputies have been selected for discussion: Deputies Kitt, Connaughton, Keogh and O'Donoghue.
