Vol. 449 No. 1

Written Answers. - Surplus Organic Fertiliser.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

200 Mr. E. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry his views on giving assistance to transfer surplus organic fertiliser to deficit areas in the country; if the development of processing facilities should be explored and assisted by the State so as to displace foreign imports of phosphate and similar products and to create much needed employment in country areas. [3254/95]

The question of transferring surplus organic fertiliser to deficit areas in the country has been considered by my Department in the past. A small transport subsidy scheme was introduced in the Lough Sheelin area of County Cavan during the early 1980s as a measure to tackle the euthrophication of that lake. There are no funds available in my Department to finance such a scheme on a countrywide basis. Processing facilities for organic fertiliser have not been developed to the extent that they could be recommended on the scale envisaged. My Department is examining the feasibility of developing such facilities, possibly on a pilot basis.
