Vol. 449 No. 1

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy Michael Smith. I now call on Deputy Smith to state the matter of which he has given notice.

I hereby request the Adjournment of the Dáil in accordance with Standing Order 30 to ask the Minister for Defence the plans, if any, he has for a substantial reduction in the numbers of the Defence Forces and the closure of Army barracks, his reasons for these decisions, the lack of consultation involved, the book-keeping nature of these decisions and his disregard for strategic defence locations and the social and family consequences for the members of the Defence Forces involved.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

On a point of order, I ask whether the shock announcement made by the Minister for Defence on radio this morning was caused by a defensive slip or a leak from the front row on the previous day.
