Vol. 449 No. 1

Written Answers. - Net Savings.

Peter Barry

Question:

57 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Finance the nett savings it is calculated will accrue to the Exchequer as a result of the peace process in the coming financial year. [3220/95]

It is not possible at this point to calculate the net savings that may accrue to the Exchequer as a result of the peace process in 1995.

The principal areas in which savings may arise are expenditure on the Army and the gardaí in the Border region. Realisation of such savings depends on a number of factors and will not be apparent until later in the year.

My Department will be monitoring the situation along with the Departments of Defence and Justice in order to ensure that such savings as may be possible, consonant with overriding security requirements, are achieved.
