Vol. 449 No. 2

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy Dr. Jim McDaid. I call on Deputy McDaid to state the matter of which he has given me notice.

Under Standing Order 30 I seek the Adjournment of the Dáil to discuss a matter of immediate concern to the people of the six southern Border counties, that is the proposed change in the proportionality of the European Union £240 million package, in that now 20 per cent only of these funds will be available to the Border counties as opposed to 80 per cent in the six counties of Northern Ireland involved in that package.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the relevant Standing Order. Therefore, I cannot grant the Deputy leave to move the motion.

A Cheann Comhairle, may I seek your advice on this matter? How can I raise the issue? It was well known in advance that the meeting was to take place. How was it, then, that the three Northern Ireland MEPs attended but there was no representation from this side of the Border?

The matter to which the Deputy refers this morning is ongoing. There are many ways and means open to him and to other Members of the House for raising such matters. My office is at the Deputy's disposal in that regard.

We asked questions about it but they were ruled out — no answer to the Border counties.
