Vol. 449 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sunday Trading.

Robert Molloy

Question:

32 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment, in view of the proposals made by the MANDATE union to the effect that Sunday trading is damaging employment and is leading to the closure of smaller stores, the legislation, if any, he proposes to introduce to regulate it; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I refer the Deputy to the detailed replies given in the House to priority-oral questions on 26 October 1994 and to a written question on 31 January 1995 in this regard — reference Official Report of 26 October 1994, Volume 446 No. 4; Col. 933-936 and 31 January, 1995, Volume 448 No. 3; Col. 711-712.

The study being undertaken by the Irish Productivity Centre into the various implications of Sunday trading is continuing at present and when received, will form a basis for reaching important policy conclusions on the various issues involved.
