Vol. 449 No. 2

Written Answers. - County Galway Project.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Question:

50 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment the current situation regarding a project (details supplied) in County Galway. [3462/95]

As the project concerned involves a bridge which would connect two regional roads, responsibility for it would be a matter for Galway County Council. In the normal way, the cost would fall to be met by the council from its own resources, supplemented by the annual discretionary grant from my Department.

It was open to the council to include the project in its applications for funding in 1995 under the EU co-financed scheme of grants for non-national roads, having regard to the criteria concerning eligibility. The council submitted 28 such applications, including a request for £75,000 for a study to evaluate the bridge proposal; in all, the council's applications entail an estimated expenditure of £3.344 million in 1995. I am now examining the applications from local authorities generally and hope to notify the grant allocations in the near future.
