Vol. 449 No. 6

Written Answers. - Méanscoil Feirste.

Bertie Ahern

Question:

26 Mr. B. Ahern asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will continue to make strong representations to the British Prime Minister regarding State funding for Meánscoil Feirste, the all-Irish secondary school in Belfast. [2034/95]

The Government has consistently emphasised within the framework of the Anglo-Irish Agreement the importance of ensuring that the rights and identities of the two traditions in Northern Ireland are fully respected. We have paid particular attention in this regard to the position of the Irish language as an important part of a cultural heritage which is relevant to both traditions in Ireland. In this context I have raised with the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, including at the recent meeting of the Intergovernmental Conference, the question of the provision of financial assistance to Méanscoil Feirste and urged that positive consideration be given to this request. The Deputy will also be aware that the Taoiseach has brought the matter to the attention of the British Prime Minister with a view to éncouraging a favourable response.

On the basis of recent contacts with the British authorities I am hopeful that progress can be made in responding to what is widely seen as the school's reasonable request for financial assistance. The Deputy can be assured that the Government will continue to follow closely developments in this regard and to pursue the matter, as appropriate, with the British Government.
