Vol. 450 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sheep Premium.

Brian Cowen

Question:

128 Mr. Cowen asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the outcome of the proposal for an extensification premium for sheep farmers; whether he prefers an extensification premium rather than an extension of the rural world premium as a policy option; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4844/95]

I am pursuing a number of options with the EU Commission with a view to securing more equitable income support arrangements for Irish sheep producers. My approach on the issue will be influenced by the reaction of the Commission.

Question:

129 Mr. Cowen asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the arrangements, if any, that are being made for the speedy payment of the final instalment of the ewe premium; when he expects payments to eligible farmers to be completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4845/95]

The final instalment of the 1994 ewe premium became payable from 21 February 1995 in accordance with the relevant EU regulation. Payment has already been made to almost 48,000 flockowners. Most of the remaining cases are the subject of query of one kind or another and payment will be made in these cases as queries are resolved.
