Vol. 450 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sexual Harassment.

Ivor Callely

Question:

75 Mr. Calley asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform if he has satisfied himself with the existing legislation to address sexual or other harassment in the workplace; if he will introduce legislation on the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4808/95]

The Employment Equality Act, 1977 prohibits discrimination on grounds of gender, including discrimination on grounds of sexual harassment. Proposals for new legislation that will replace, and broaden the scope of, existing employment equality legislation are being developed in my Department. In developing the proposals, the options for enhancing legislative protection in the areas of sexual harassment and harassment generally will be thoroughly examined and the outcome of that examination will be reflected in the new employment equality legislation when published.
