Vol. 450 No. 2

Written Answers. - Urban Renewal Programme.

Liam Burke

Question:

82 Mr. L. Burke asked the Minister for the Environment the extent to which the urban renewal programme has been effective in Cork; the amount of construction it has generated in the city; the proportion applicable to the north-side of the city; if, at the conclusion of the current phase, he will introduce a new initiative; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4802/95]

In 1986, two areas involving 99 acres were designated in Cork. These were located in the South Parish/The Marsh/Shandon area of the city with a smaller area in Blackpool. In 1990, the scheme was extended to include an additional 27 acres in the Union Quay/McCurtain Street/Anderson Quay area of the inner city.

The former scheme expired on 31 July 1994 and a new scheme came into effect on 1 August 1994. Under the new scheme, approximately 49 acres were designated, consisting of four areas as follows: an area known as the North Gate, an area known as the South Gate, an area between St. Patrick's Quay, McCurtain Street and St. Patrick's Place, and an area around Blackpool.
The previous scheme was very successful in Cork. The latest information available in my Department shows that the level of private sector investment was in excess of £70 million in respect of projects completed and in progress. A complete locational breakdown of this investment is not available in my Department.
The present scheme will continue up to 31 July 1997. I intend to have a review carried out of the effectiveness of the scheme so as to better inform future policy decisions in this area.
