Vol. 450 No. 2

Written Answers. - Smog Levels.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

93 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the high smog levels which exist in towns such as Bandon, County Cork; and when his Department will begin monitoring in such towns. [5029/95]

Ambient monitoring of smoke and sulphur dioxide is carried out by local authorities in some 27 cities and towns. An annual summary report of this monitoring is co-ordinated by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Monitoring locations, which do not include Bandon, have been selected because of the possibility that their smoke and sulphur dioxide levels could, in certain conditions, approximate to the levels set by statutory air quality standards. I will ask the local authority concerned and the Environment Protection Agency to consider establishing a monitoring programme for Bandon.
