132 Mr. Hyland asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will consider the early re-introduction of area aid for the production of green peas for which there is a considerable market outlet and which would provide a profitable alternative land use for Irish farmers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. EU regulations governing area aid provide for payment for peas sown with the intention of harvesting them in their dry state. Vining (green) peas, which are harvested in a green state and which are artificially dried, are not eligible for area aid. I intend to press the EU Commission to try to have this crop included in the arable area payments system.
