Vol. 450 No. 4

Written Answers. - Area Aid Scheme.

Liam Hyland

Question:

132 Mr. Hyland asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will consider the early re-introduction of area aid for the production of green peas for which there is a considerable market outlet and which would provide a profitable alternative land use for Irish farmers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5307/95]

EU regulations governing area aid provide for payment for peas sown with the intention of harvesting them in their dry state. Vining (green) peas, which are harvested in a green state and which are artificially dried, are not eligible for area aid. I intend to press the EU Commission to try to have this crop included in the arable area payments system.
