M. J. Nolan

38 Mr. Nolan asked the Minister for Education when school meals will be provided for children in disadvantaged areas who are participating in the early start programme. [5102/95]

Mary Coughlan

Question:

41 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for Education if she will provide school meals to children participating in the early start programme in disadvantaged areas; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5100/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 38 and 41, together.

School meals are provided to qualifying pupils in primary schools under the urban school meals scheme. This scheme is jointly funded by the Department of Social Welfare and the local authorities.
My Department is currently in discussion with both of these parties with a view to securing their earliest possible agreement to extend the scheme to pupils attending pre-schools established under the early start programme.
