68 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education the full list and capacity of all third level and post-leaving certificate colleges in the general Dun Laoghaire catchment area; the current enrolment number in each college; and the reason for the decision to open a new urban college in the area. The third-level and post leaving certificate colleges in the Dún Laoghaire catchment area are as follows:

A Government of Renewal Policy Agreement indicates that in the lifetime of the Government an urban college will be developed on the existing campus in Dún Laoghaire. The College of Art and Design is located on the site and moneys have been spent in refurbishing and up-grading the existing facilities. Given its location and the physical and educational infrastructure already in place, the site provides an ideal location for expansion, at minimal cost, in meeting the growing demand for third level places in the greater Dublin area.

The status of the college will be determined following consideration of the recommendations of the Steering Committee on the Future Development of Higher Education.

The college which will be a regional technical college will provide a range of courses with particular regard to local needs and serving a wide catchment area.
