Vol. 450 No. 4

Written Answers. - Part-time Teacher Contracts.

Batt O'Keeffe

Question:

70 Mr. B. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education if she has satisfied herself with the operation of eligible part-time teachers contracts in regional colleges and Dublin Institutes of Technology; and her views on whether there is an untoward reliance on part-time teachers within these colleges. [4379/95]

The amount of teaching in this sector carried out by eligible part-time staff is a matter in the first instance for management of the particular institution to decide in the light of local circumstances. Where there are extensive part-time and evening programmes, as in the case of the Dublin Institute of Technology, there tends, of necessity, to be a greater reliance on part-time specialist lecturing staff.

Figures available to my Department indicate that the number of part-time teaching hours as a proportion of the total number of teaching hours has declined.
