Vol. 450 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dublin School Staffing Level.

Tony Gregory

Question:

81 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the concerns of the parents, management and teaching staff of a school (details supplied) in Dublin at the threatened loss of two teachers in the 1995/1996 school year; and in view of these concerns and also the disadvantage of the pupils, if the existing staff will be maintained in the school. [4535/95]

The staffing of a national school is determined by the enrolment on 30 September of a particular year. The enrolment of the school referred to by the Deputy on 30 September 1993 was 135 which warrants a staffing of principal plus four assistants for the current school year. The enrolment on 30 September 1994 was 113 which will warrant a staffing of principal plus three assistants for the 1995-96 school year. The school also has an amalgamation staffing concession, the services of a remedial teacher and a concessionary disadvantaged teacher, giving it a very favourable staffing ratio compared to other schools.

In light of the fall in enrolment the school is due to lose one assistant teacher for the 1995-96 school year. I regret that it will not be possible to allow the retention of this post. The teacher has advised the Department that he will allow his name to be placed on the panel for redeployment to another school for the 1995-96 school year.
