Vol. 450 No. 4

Written Answers. - Castletownbere (Cork) Customs Office.

Joe Walsh

Question:

91 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Finance if he will reopen the Customs office at Castletownbere, County Cork, in view of the growing problem of drug smuggling off the south-west coast. [5332/95]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that they are fully alert to the dangers of drug smuggling. Experience has shown that intelligence gathering and surveillance, rather than a static presence are the best measures of combating drug smuggling. Recognising this position the Commissioners have made a substantial commitment in terms of staff and other resources to the Customs National Drugs Team and they are satisfied that effective measures are in place to combat drug smuggling along the south west coast. In these circumstances, the Commissioners do not deem it necessary to re-open the Customs office in Castletownbere, but they will keep the situation there under constant review.
