Vol. 450 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Insurance Costs.

Ivor Callely

Question:

108 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the escalating insurance costs that primary, secondary and vocational school authorities are experiencing; the measures, if any, she will introduce to address this problem; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5259/95]

I am aware that insurance costs constitute a significant element of the annual running costs of schools. Grants awarded by my Department towards current costs may be used for this purpose.

It is a matter for the managerial authorities of individual primary and secondary schools to arrange insurance cover on school property and against public liability. In the case of vocational schools, insurance cover is arranged by the relevant vocational education committee. With regard to community and comprehensive schools, the State provides a general idemnity to the authorities of these schools in lieu of their taking out insurance cover against liabilities which may arise.
I have no proposals to alter existing arrangements. It is, however, open to school authorities, or their representative associations, to take such initiatives as the collective negotiation of insurance premiums with a view to reducing costs.
