Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Plays.

Question:

112 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Education the plays offered to leaving certificate students as part of their examination studies in the academic years 1995/1996 and 1996/1997. [5450/95]

The plays offered at leaving certificate English ordinary level in 1995 are:

(i) Macbeth (Shakespeare), (ii) Philadelphia Here I Come (Friel), Arms and the Man (Shaw), and at higher level:

(i) Macbeth, (ii) Murder in the Cathedral (Eliot), (iii) Philadelphia Here I Come, (iv) Saint Joan (Shaw).

The plays of 1996 are — at ordinary level:
(i) Hamlet (Shakespeare), (ii) The Playboy of the Western World (Synge), (iii) Death of a Salesman (Miller),
and at higher level:
(i) Hamlet (Shakespeare), (ii) The Playboy of the Western World (Synge), (iii) Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (Stoppard), (iv) Death of a Salesman (Miller).
The courses for English at leaving certificate 1997 onwards are being revised. When proposals from the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment have been accepted the question of when they will be introduced will be considered.
