Vol. 450 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Question:

113 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for Education if she will extend the school bus service to Clifden for secondary school pupils from the head of Inishnee Road near Roundstone as far as the Toombula crossroads between Roundstone and Cashel. [5452/95]

Under the terms of the school transport post-primary scheme it is not possible to extend the service in question. The school transport scheme is intended to provide a basic level of service for pupils who would otherwise experience difficulty in attending school regularly. Pupils living off the main route of a service are generally expected to make their own way to a convenient pick-up point. Home pick-ups are not a feature of the scheme as the cost of providing such services on a countryside basis would be prohibitive. The service being provided to these pupils is regarded as adequate and is the most that can be offered to the pupils in this instance.
