Written Answers. - Student Grants.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

119 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education, in respect of the proposed abolition of university fees in the Republic and the proposed payment of university fees for Irish students studying abroad, if this will include payment of university fees of Irish students studying at United States universities; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5541/95]

Pat Upton

Question:

123 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education if she will provide details of the maintenance grants scheme planned for Irish students taking third-level courses outside the country; and when the scheme will commence. [5589/95]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 119 and 123 together.

The 1995 Budget Statement indicated that maintenance grants under the higher education grants scheme would be extended to approved courses being followed by Irish students studying abroad with effect from the 1996-97 academic year. The detailed arrangements in relation to implementing this commitment are being considered in my Department at present. I will elaborate on the arrangements when I have had an opportunity to consider the position and take the appropriate decisions.
